Southeast Asia faces rising energy security risks amid surging demand

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that energy security risks in Southeast Asia are increasing faster than the development of new power supply solutions. The region faces seemingly ‘limitless’ energy demand driven by rapid industrialization, urbanization, and rising living standards, with per capita consumption increasing nearly 30% over the last decade.

Rising electricity needs are further fueled by the operation of data centers and the requirement for cooling systems in homes and businesses. The IEA forecasts an average annual demand growth of 5.4% through 2030. To mitigate these risks, the agency recommends that Southeast Asian nations diversify their energy sources and engage in cross-border power sharing.

However, experts warn that implementation faces significant hurdles, including territorial disputes between neighbors and differing national energy market models. These obstacles may leave the region vulnerable to global energy market volatility and price shocks.
