Southeast Asian gaming industry contributes USD 8.2 billion to GDP

The video game industry has become a significant economic driver in Southeast Asia, contributing approximately USD 8.2 billion (around Rp 147 trillion) to the GDP of five specific nations: Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.

According to Cheng Wei Swee, Director of Access Partnership, the sector supports more than 640,000 jobs. The economic impact is largely driven by developers, manufacturers, and esports organizers, who account for roughly 50% of the industry's total value.

Projections suggest the industry will continue to expand, potentially reaching a value of USD 14.2 billion and supporting 1.16 million jobs by 2030. Key growth drivers include direct investment, skill and capacity transfers, and improved market access, though experts note that a strategic approach is required to facilitate this continued development.
