Southeast Asian nations advance semiconductor industry strategies

Southeast Asian nations are rapidly advancing national industrial strategies to establish themselves as regional semiconductor hubs. Thailand has unveiled a national semiconductor plan, while Malaysia has committed over US$45 million toward advanced chip packaging.

Vietnam is deepening its regional cooperation through the semiconductor association and is navigating a partnership with the United States. This partnership presents both significant opportunities and challenges regarding institutional reform and the capacity to implement domestic policy. Meanwhile, the Philippines is currently debating the terms of a major chip and computing project.

These coordinated efforts represent a significant push to attract nearshoring capital, though the region faces constraints such as shortages of skilled labor and limited access to data.
