Southeast Asian nations prioritize energy transition and efficiency

Southeast Asian nations are emphasizing energy transition and efficiency as critical drivers for economic growth and energy security.

In Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, stated that the energy transition is both an environmental imperative and a strategic economic necessity. He noted that rising electricity demand and the finite nature of fossil fuels—with oil and gas reserves estimated to last approximately 50 years—necessitate a shift toward more resilient and sustainable energy systems. Geopolitical volatility in West Asia has further underscored the urgency of reducing reliance on conventional resources.

In Vietnam, officials are focusing on energy efficiency to enhance industrial competitiveness and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The National Energy Efficiency Programme for 2019-2030 (VNEEP3) aims to save 8-10% of total national energy consumption. While the program has increased awareness, challenges remain for businesses regarding capital, technology, and investment payback periods. New legal frameworks and government decrees are being enforced to increase the responsibilities of management agencies and local authorities in promoting modern energy management.
