Southeast Asian tourism shows split growth in Philippines and Thailand

Tourism trends in Southeast Asia show diverging paths for the Philippines and Thailand during the first eight months of 2026. The Philippines reported a 3.7 percent increase in foreign arrivals, totaling 4.11 million visitors. The United States and South Korea were the top two source markets for the country.

In contrast, Thailand experienced a 3.08 percent decline in foreign tourists, with 20.93 million arrivals. While Chinese tourism to Thailand grew by 16.05 percent, significant drops in visitors from South Korea and Malaysia contributed to the overall decrease.

To combat economic pressures and rising inflation, which reached 2.53 percent in August, the Thai government is introducing a 50:50 domestic travel co-payment scheme to subsidize local tourism. The strategy aims to use major fourth-quarter events and travel subsidies to stimulate spending and support local communities.
