Southeast Europe energy investments to reach 711 billion euros by 2035
Energy investments in Southeast Europe are projected to reach 711 billion euros by 2035, with the majority directed toward electricity generation, according to a study by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
In Greece, fuel prices remain among the highest in Europe. During the first eight months of 2026, diesel prices rose by 14.9% and unleaded gasoline by 8% compared to the same period in 2025. While electricity demand in Greece fell by 1.85% year-on-year, the country became a net exporter of electricity for the first time, as electricity imports dropped by 34.4% and exports rose by 75.3%.
Rising fuel costs and stricter emission regulations are driving a shift toward electric mobility in the European Union. In the first half of 2026, new battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in the EU increased by 40.5% compared to the previous year, reaching 1,220,890 units. BEVs now hold a 20.7% market share. Additionally, plug-in hybrid registrations rose to 577,735 units, accounting for 9.8% of the market.
