Southeastern Conference drops threat to expel LSU

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has withdrawn its threat to expel Louisiana State University (LSU), concluding a period of legal and political tension without a vote or immediate sanctions. SEC leaders met via video conference to discuss conference expectations and responsibilities, stating that talks will continue toward an “appropriate resolution.”

The dispute originated from LSU coach Lane Kiffin’s attempt to recruit former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Both athletes had previously signed NFL contracts, which raised questions regarding their college eligibility under the NCAA’s new five-year structure. While a Baton Rouge judge recently barred the SEC from punishing schools for involving such players, the SEC filed a federal lawsuit in Alabama against LSU, its president, its athletic director, and Kiffin, citing First Amendment rights.

Louisiana officials have strongly opposed the SEC’s actions. Attorney General Liz Murrill characterized the federal case as “legal garbage,” and Governor Jeff Landry argued that the players in question were not established professionals.
