Gard and Hérault under red alert for exceptional rainfall and flooding

The departments of Gard and Hérault in southern France have been placed under red alert for rain and flooding due to an exceptional Mediterranean weather episode. Météo-France has characterized the event as exceptional, with rainfall intensities potentially reaching 50 to 80 mm per hour. Total rainfall accumulations in the Cévennes region are expected to reach between 200 and 350 mm.

The extreme weather has already caused significant disruptions. Schools and universities in the Gard and Hérault departments have been closed, and public transport, including school buses and local shuttles, has been suspended. In the Gard, SNCF has implemented a total interruption of rail traffic on the Nîmes to Clermont-Ferrand axis.

In addition to heavy rainfall, two tornadoes were observed touching the ground near Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department. Authorities have advised residents to limit travel, stay indoors, and avoid flooded roads or riverbanks. Other departments, including Lozère, Ardèche, and Bouches-du-Rhône, have been placed under orange alert.
