Southern Baptist senior pastors saw pay cuts over two years
A new study by Lifeway Research, in collaboration with Baptist state conventions and GuideStone Financial Resources, reveals that compensation for full-time senior pastors within the Southern Baptist Convention has declined. Between 2024 and 2026, compensation for these senior pastors decreased by 1.5%, while their overall pay packages saw a 0.4% reduction.
In contrast, other church roles experienced financial growth during the same period. Full-time staff ministers saw a 4.9% increase in compensation, and full-time office personnel saw compensation rises of 9.2%.
Lifeway Research Executive Director Scott McConnell noted that many churches are facing financial pressures due to lower active membership numbers following the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend may force some pastors in smaller congregations to seek secondary employment to maintain their livelihoods.
