Southern Brazil storms cause fatalities and widespread damage
Severe weather, including heavy rain, hail, and high winds, has caused significant damage across Southern Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul, storms have resulted in two deaths—a child in Porto Alegre and an elderly man in Arroio Grande—and affected 47 municipalities. Over 9,000 people have been impacted, with dozens displaced or homeless.
In Santa Catarina, a wedge tornado was confirmed in the rural area of Campo Erê. The state remains under high alert for intense rainfall, potentially reaching 200mm in some regions, alongside risks of flooding and windstorms. In Florianópolis, municipal schools and nurseries in the northern part of the island suspended classes due to structural damage from hail.
Paraná has also experienced severe instability, with storms affecting at least ten municipalities. High wind gusts, such as 95.8 km/h in Santa Maria do Oeste, and significant electrical activity have been recorded. Inmet has maintained severe storm alerts for the region, warning of potential damage to infrastructure, crops, and power grids.
