Rio Grande do Sul faces severe storms and flood risks through Monday
Southern Brazil is facing a period of severe weather as an extratropical cyclone, a cold front, and an atmospheric river combine to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding to Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná.
In Rio Grande do Sul, meteorologists warn of rising water levels in the Jacuí, Taquari, Caí, and Uruguai rivers. Rainfall accumulations could exceed 250 mm over the next four days. Recent storms have already caused significant damage, including an eight-year-old boy's death in Porto Alegre after a tree struck a home, and wind gusts of 95.5 km/h in Quaraí that damaged 287 roofs. Dozens of residents in Pelotas, Santa Cruz do Sul, and Quaraí have been displaced or left homeless.
The atmospheric river is transporting intense moisture from the Amazon, which, combined with a stationary cold front, increases the risk of prolonged precipitation and hydrological flooding. The most intense rainfall is expected to impact the northern regions of Rio Grande do Sul and parts of Santa Catarina and Paraná through Monday.
