Inmet issues red alert for severe storms in Southern Brazil

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a red alert—the highest severity level—for severe storms affecting 529 municipalities across the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. The alert is valid for Friday, October 9, and warns of intense rainfall exceeding 60 mm per hour or 100 mm throughout the day, wind gusts surpassing 100 km/h, and the possibility of hail.

These storms pose significant risks, including flooding, fallen trees, power outages, damage to buildings, and agricultural losses. The instability is driven by a combination of warm, humid air from the Amazon, a low-pressure area between northern Argentina and Paraguay, and an advancing cold front.

In addition to the red alert in the South, Mato Grosso do Sul is under a yellow alert for potential storm danger through Monday. Other regions, including parts of the North, Southeast, and Central-West, are also under various levels of meteorological warnings for storms or low humidity.
