Southern California Edison Transmission Tower Identified as Source of 2025 Eaton Fire in Altadena

An 18‑month investigation by the Los Angeles County Fire Department concluded that an inactive transmission tower owned by Southern California Edison sparked the Eaton Fire on Jan. 7 2025 in Altadena, California. The blaze killed 19 people, destroyed more than 9,000 structures and caused roughly $164 billion in property damage.

Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said the cause was now clear and emphasized the department’s focus on rebuilding homes and livelihoods. Edison spokeswoman Kathleen Dunleavy acknowledged the findings, noting the company had established a compensation fund for victims earlier in the year. Rebuilding continues amid insurance challenges and concerns that developers may reshape the historically Black neighborhood.

The investigation relied on video evidence showing burning material falling from the tower and igniting dry vegetation at its base.
