Southern California experiences record-breaking humidity

Southern California is experiencing record-breaking humidity levels, with dew points reaching levels typically associated with tropical environments. In Los Angeles, dew points hit between 70 and 75 degrees, while the Salton Sea recorded a stifling 81 degrees. Meteorologists noted that these conditions are comparable to the Amazon rainforest.

Experts attribute this extreme moisture to several factors, including a heat dome over the Southwest United States and a severe marine heat wave. High-altitude winds are reportedly pulling moist tropical air from Mexico into the Los Angeles area. Other contributing factors include unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, the remnants of Tropical Storm Iselle, and El Niño patterns.
