Southern California faces extreme heat and wildfire risks

A prolonged and dangerous heat wave is sweeping across Southern California, with the National Weather Service issuing extreme heat warnings for several counties, including San Diego and Los Angeles. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s near the coast and climb into the 100s or even as high as 107 degrees in inland valleys. The heat wave is forecast to persist from Friday through at least next Thursday.

The combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and Santa Ana winds has significantly increased wildfire risks. Consequently, utility companies are preparing for potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). San Diego Gas & Electric Co. has flagged potential outages for more than 35,000 customers in at-risk communities, while Edison International is considering preventive shutoffs for nearly 10,000 customers in Riverside County.

Increased energy demand is also a major concern. The California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO) has issued notices to avoid maintenance that could jeopardize grid availability as residents increase air conditioning use. Officials are urging residents to conserve energy, stay hydrated, and monitor emergency alerts to prepare for potential outages and heat-related illnesses.
