Southern California officials address rising e-bike injuries
Healthcare leaders and officials in Southern California are addressing a significant rise in e-bike-related injuries and deaths. In Santa Barbara, Cottage Health leaders reported that e-bike injuries in their emergency department have surpassed traditional bicycle injuries for most of 2026. Staff noted seeing up to five injuries daily, ranging from lacerations and fractures to traumatic brain injuries. Hospital officials are calling for safety legislation to address dangerous riding behaviors and illegally modified bikes.
In Orange County, officials are debating whether education, enforcement, or infrastructure overhauls are the most effective way to curb the trend. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer recently hosted an e-bike buyback program intended to remove dangerous bikes from the streets, though the $100,000 fund for participant gift cards was exhausted mid-event due to high demand. While some attribute accidents to reckless riding, survivors and their families emphasize that even responsible riders face severe risks, including life-threatening injuries from vehicle collisions.
