Southern California officials warn of high surf for Labor Day weekend

Authorities in Southern California are warning beachgoers of dangerous ocean conditions expected over the Labor Day weekend. In Laguna Beach, Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond reported that a south swell event could produce surf reaching up to 10 feet starting Saturday and continuing through Monday.

Los Angeles County officials also issued warnings regarding high surf, rip currents, and potential coastal flooding. While Hurricane Marie is not expected to make landfall, tropical influences are projected to impact south-facing shores. Additionally, there is a moderate risk of light rain and isolated thunderstorms that could create hazardous driving conditions.

Safety officials urge residents to check with lifeguards before entering the water, avoid swimming alone, and stay away from rocks, jetties, and piers. Laguna Beach officials noted that the area has already experienced three fatal incidents at its beaches this summer.
