Southern Cone commemorations honor victims of military dictatorships

Commemorative activities are being held to honor victims of civil-military dictatorships in the Southern Cone. In Argentina, the Instituto Espacio de la Memoria organized the “La Memoria Late” musical cycle at the Teatro del Pueblo. The event, held in observance of the 50th anniversary of the 1976 coup and International Day of the Disappeared, featured local bands including La Huella Afro, Monte Santo, Nataly Montes, Chi-Killa, and Que Bajón to promote collective memory through art.

In Uruguay, historical accounts continue to document the violence of the previous dictatorship. Records detail the 1971 killing of Julio César Spósito Vitali, a 19-year-old student and Catholic activist, who was shot in the back by police during a demonstration in Montevideo. The incident, which occurred near the Faculty of Chemistry, remains a part of the regional effort to maintain memory of those detained, tortured, or disappeared.
