Southern Crete power outages spark legal threats and wildfire concerns

Residents and local authorities in Southern Crete are reporting frequent and prolonged power outages and voltage drops during the peak summer tourism season. In the Municipality of Sfakia, Mayor Ioannis Zervos has threatened legal action against the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) if the situation persists, citing damages to household and professional equipment, as well as food spoilage.

Specific areas such as Frangokastello and Asfendo have been heavily impacted. In Asfendo, following a fire on August 1, the region faced extended periods without electricity. In other parts of the Heraklion regional unit, including Viannos and Archanes, outages have disrupted economic activity and tourism.

Local speculation suggests these may not be mere technical failures but rather intentional, preemptive cuts by the grid operator to prevent wildfires caused by aging infrastructure and falling cables during high winds. While HEDNO maintains the outages are due to technical faults, local officials and residents express growing frustration over the economic consequences and the potential lack of network maintenance.
