Europe weather: Wildfires and tornadoes cause widespread damage

Southern Europe has faced severe weather events, including a devastating tornado in southern France with wind speeds exceeding 200 km/h that damaged nearly 300 homes and injured 39 people. In Spain, a major fire in the Collserola Natural Park near Barcelona has been described as the most significant since 1994, affecting 57 hectares.

In France, the summer wildfire season has resulted in an unprecedented economic impact. Insurance federation France Assureurs reports approximately 25,000 claims with an estimated cost of 500 million euros, a massive increase from the 80 million euros recorded in 2022. The high volume of claims has prompted discussions among industry leaders regarding the long-term insurability of high-risk climate zones.

Additionally, authorities have officially declared the wildfires in the Fontainebleau forest extinguished after several weeks of monitoring. The fires previously destroyed approximately 2,000 hectares of woodland. While about 80 percent of the forest has been reopened to the public, certain areas remain restricted due to safety concerns and ongoing restoration efforts.
