Southern European Wildfires Expose Climate Risks and Management Gaps

In Sicily, professor Aurelio Angelini warned that while global warming creates hotter conditions, the severity of summer fires is amplified by poor forest maintenance, inadequate water infrastructure, and weak territorial planning. He called for a shift from emergency response to preventive investment to reduce future economic, environmental, and social costs.

In Greece, a helicopter crash while fighting the blaze west of Athens killed two firefighters, a Greek and a Danish crew member, and injured others. The fires have destroyed around 200 homes, forced the evacuation of more than 2,500 people, and prompted the deployment of over 500 firefighters, with assistance from foreign crews. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed deep sorrow and pledged state support for victims, while fire federation head Nikos Lavranos described the situation as a massive, black‑carpet‑like front.

Both countries are part of a broader European summer fire crisis driven by record temperatures and drought, highlighting the need for coordinated climate‑adaptation policies and improved land‑management practices.
