Southern Gemer region undergoes rescue efforts after severe windstorm

Rescue operations are ongoing in the southern Gemer region of Slovakia following a severe windstorm that struck between Friday night and Saturday. The storm heavily impacted several municipalities in the Rimavská Sobota district and the town of Tornaľa in the Revúca district.

The storm caused extensive damage, including uprooted trees, destroyed electrical lines, and damaged roofs on numerous residential, apartment, and cultural buildings. The destruction of power lines led to widespread electricity outages. An extraordinary situation was declared in 15 municipalities within the Rimavská Sobota district and Tornaľa to facilitate coordinated relief efforts.

Emergency responders, including the Fire and Rescue Service, volunteer firefighters, municipal services, and energy workers, are working to clear debris and repair infrastructure. Authorities are providing temporary roof coverings, supplying drinking water to affected areas, and distributing generators. The Ministry of Interior and the Rimavská Sobota District Office are monitoring the situation to restore standard services as quickly as possible.
