Germany and Austria face heavy holiday return traffic

A major return travel wave is expected from September 11 to 13 as summer holidays conclude in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and several Austrian regions. The ADAC predicts heavy traffic, particularly on routes heading north from the south and from coastal areas.

Peak congestion is anticipated on Friday afternoons and evenings, Saturday mornings, and throughout much of Sunday. Major German motorways likely to experience significant delays include the A1, A2, A3, A5, A7, A8, and A9. In Austria, the A1, A10, A11, A12, and A13 are identified as high-risk routes for congestion.

Travelers face additional disruptions due to approximately 1,000 ongoing construction sites across Germany. Specific closures, such as the A7 between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld, are also expected to impact flow. Some Bavarian districts have implemented transit bans on certain roads to mitigate congestion during peak times.
