Southern Germany faces significant agricultural harvest losses

Extreme heat and drought have led to significant agricultural harvest losses across southern Germany. In Bavaria, the apple harvest is projected to decrease by 33.5 percent compared to the previous year, totaling approximately 22,000 tons. Other fruit losses in the region include a 20.1 percent drop in pears and a 14.8 percent decline in sour cherries.

The Federal Association of the Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry (BOGK) noted that these production declines are being felt throughout Europe, particularly affecting berries and sour cherries. This shortage is driving up raw material prices, which impacts manufacturers of jams and fruit spreads.

In Baden-Württemberg, the grain harvest is expected to reach 2.53 million tons, a 13.6 percent decrease from the previous year. Apple yields in the state are also suffering, with estimates showing a yield of 26.78 t/ha, nearly 15 percent below the six-year average.
