Southern Hemisphere conifers defy ecological growth and drought rules
A new study published in the journal Nature challenges a long-standing principle in plant ecology: the idea that plants cannot simultaneously achieve rapid growth and high drought tolerance. Research led by the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB) in Chile reveals that exotic conifers planted in the Southern Hemisphere grow up to four times faster than their northern counterparts while maintaining greater resilience to water stress.
By analyzing the growth rings of nine Pinaceae species across 192 sites in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Oceania, researchers found that these exotic populations defy traditional ecological rules. Lead researcher Álex Fajardo suggests this phenomenon may occur because these species escape natural enemies, such as specialized herbivores and pathogens, that are more prevalent in their native ranges.
While the findings are significant for understanding plant adaptation, the research team cautions against using exotic species as a universal solution for reforestation and climate change. They note that introducing non-native species can negatively impact local biodiversity and lead to invasive species issues, such as the expansion of the lodgepole pine in Chile’s Aysén region.
