Southern Hemisphere influenza and RSV surge prompts vaccination push

The Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization warned on 1 July 2026 of rising influenza activity, now dominated by A(H3N2) with a progressive increase in influenza B, alongside sustained circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) across countries in the Southern Hemisphere. The agencies urged intensified vaccination for risk groups, integrated surveillance and hospital preparedness to manage expected rises in outpatient visits, hospital admissions, pediatric beds and intensive‑care demand.

In Chile’s Magallanes region, the regional health authority reported a 41.5 % positivity rate for respiratory viruses in the week of 21‑27 June, with RSV at 33.3 % and influenza B at 22.2 %. Officials called for higher vaccine uptake among seniors, young children and people with chronic conditions, noting a 72.15 % influenza‑vaccination coverage and 92.84 % RSV‑vaccine coverage for infants. They also emphasized standard preventive measures such as hand hygiene, ventilation and mask use for symptomatic individuals.
