Southern Illinois University researchers turn plastic waste into edible cookies
Researchers at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale have developed a method to convert plastic waste into edible, protein-rich cookies. The project was part of the NASA Deep Space Food Challenge, aimed at creating sustainable food sources for space exploration.
The process utilizes polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common plastic used in water bottles, and agricultural waste. By reprogramming various yeast strains, the team can convert the carbon molecules found in PET and biomass into essential proteins, vitamins, and aromatic compounds.
