Southern Italian cultural festivals celebrate brigandage history

Various cultural events themed around the history of brigandage are scheduled for August 2026 in southern Italy.

In Martignano, ‘La Notte del Brigante’ will take place on August 27, 2026, at Piazza Palmieri. The event serves as a tribute to the late artist and musician Tonino Friolo. The evening will feature performances by traditional music groups, including the Briganti di Terra d’Otranto, Compagnia Arakne Mediterranea, and Allegra Compagnia Cantante, concluding with a jam session.

In Laurenzana, the ‘Festa del Brigante’ is set for August 23, 2026, at the Medieval Castle of Laurenzana. Organized by Pro Loco Universitas Laurentianae, the event commemorates the historical identity of local brigands, specifically referencing the figure of Domenico Rizzo, known as ‘Taccone’. The celebration will include music, drums, and traditional songs to honor the region's 19th-century history.
