In 2026, the South is projected to grow by 0.8%, slightly outpacing the 0.7% growth expected in the rest of the country, driven largely by the intensive spending of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). However, this momentum is expected to fade by 2027, with Southern growth projected to drop to 0.4% as extraordinary measures expire.

Despite recent industrial gains—with industrial value added rising 5.7% between 2021 and 2024—the region faces a significant talent drain. Approximately 175,000 qualified young people have left the South in that same period, resulting in an estimated annual loss of 6.7 billion euros in educational investments. Experts suggest that while infrastructure and administrative efficiency are improving due to PNRR, long-term stability requires better urban services, improved quality of life, and more high-quality employment opportunities to retain skilled workers.
