Southern Italy faces youth exodus to the North

Southern Italy is experiencing a significant structural phenomenon of youth emigration. According to Istat data for 2024-2025, approximately 60,000 people under the age of 35 leave the Mezzogiorno annually, with 43,000 of those moving toward Central and Northern Italy.

Sicily is a primary source of this migration, accounting for nearly one in four emigrants from the South. The movement is largely driven by the search for qualified employment, higher wages, better career prospects, and more efficient services. Lombardy is the leading destination, absorbing nearly 30% of those leaving Sicily, followed by Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Lazio, and Tuscany.

This migration contributes to a severe demographic decline. In Sicily, the population fell by 3.9% between 2002 and 2026, with projections suggesting a further 16.7% decrease by 2050. Experts, including the president of Svimez, note that those leaving are predominantly young professionals and university graduates, a trend that continues to weaken the social and economic fabric of the region.
