Southern Italy migrant workers left homeless as sites sealed

The Association Migranti Tutti reports that dozens of abandoned structures in Metaponto (Basilicata) that could be renovated with PNRR funds have been walled up, including the former Palazzetto at Metaponto Lido. Seasonal migrant workers who rely on these buildings for shelter are forced to seek makeshift accommodation, often in unsafe conditions, as winter approaches.

In Brindisi (Apulia), activists from the No CPR network describe the closure of an ex‑dormitory and the use of a former landfill to deport migrant workers, characterising the handling as discriminatory and lacking basic dignity. Both incidents highlight a pattern of silence from municipal authorities, the prefecture and the regional government despite repeated calls for modular housing units, showers, and the activation of regional law 13/2016 and civil‑protection measures.
