Southern Italy Seizes Two Illegal Waste Dump Sites
The Carabinieri forestals confiscated an illegal landfill in Villaggio Mancuso, Taverna, within the protected Sila National Park. The site contained demolition debris, tires, electronic waste and abandoned vehicles. The landowner and the tenant were detained and referred to the Catanzaro prosecutor for environmental code violations.
In a separate operation, municipal police and the local urban planning office seized a roughly 1,000‑square‑metre shanty settlement on agricultural land in Gromola, Capaccio Paestum. The area, occupied by extracommunity migrants, featured dilapidated caravans, open sewage, illegal electricity connections, waste piles and gas cylinders. Five individuals – three land co‑owners and two occupants – were charged with environmental, building and health code breaches, and the site was placed under criminal seizure.
