Southern Lebanon faces destruction as Israeli military faces funding crisis

In southern Lebanon, political leaders President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam have called for the protection of the region, invoking the legacy of Imam Moussa Sadr to argue that only legitimate state weapons should defend the land. This comes amid reports of severe destruction in the village of Houla, where the mayor stated that approximately 90 percent of homes and infrastructure have been destroyed. Israeli forces have reportedly demolished several houses and the municipality’s temporary headquarters, while also burning forests and agricultural fields.

Simultaneously, the Israeli security establishment is facing a critical operational crisis due to severe ammunition shortages and financial pressures. Despite political acknowledgments of a 40 billion shekel budget shortfall, officials report that promised funds have not arrived, leaving the treasury empty. This lack of funding is impacting day-to-day operations, including the repair of tanks and the replacement of hundreds of destroyed field vehicles. The financial uncertainty is also jeopardizing major procurement deals and the ability to maintain long-term operational readiness.
