Southern Medical University student death sparks online debate

A student at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou died after falling from a dormitory building on September 15. The incident sparked intense debate on Weibo regarding the academic and clinical pressures faced by medical students in long-term training programs.

Initial online rumors suggested the student, a seventh-year medical student, fell due to stress caused by a supervisor denying leave following a family tragedy. However, the deceased's sister and the supervisor involved, Mr. Wang, released WeChat chat logs to refute these claims. The records indicate that the supervisor provided financial assistance, including transfers of 2,000 and 20,000 yuan, and offered emotional support and suggestions for the student to take a leave of absence to care for his mother.

Southern Medical University has established a task force to investigate the incident and is cooperating with local authorities. The Guangzhou Public Security Bureau's Baiyun District Jingxi Police Station stated that the case is being handled and further updates will be provided.
