Heat wave hits Slovakia and Czech Republic with record temperatures and health warnings
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) issued a third‑level heat warning for southwest and central Slovakia on 3 August, forecasting temperatures up to 38 °C and warning that values could later reach 42 °C. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) issued similar warnings for the Czech Republic, with forecasts of up to 39‑40 °C in South Moravia and a heightened risk of wildfires.
Health authorities in both countries warned that children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable. They advised regular hydration, limiting sun exposure and reducing physical activity. Cities such as Brno and Prague opened cooling centres and climate‑controlled public spaces to help residents cope.
Meteorological forecasts predict the heat wave will remain tropical through the early week, with daily maxima of 38‑42 °C, before a modest cooling trend later in the week. Record temperatures were reported, including 39.9 °C in Strážnice (Moravia) and 40.1 °C in Vienna. The prolonged dry spell is also straining urban greenery; water consumption for city trees in Vyškov has doubled, prompting expanded irrigation and additional staff.
