Southern Ontario hit by severe storms and flooding
Southern Ontario has faced significant weather disruptions due to a series of powerful thunderstorms. A major storm on September 2 brought torrential rain, large hail, and damaging winds, leading Toronto to declare a significant weather event. Rainfall amounts reached up to 112 millimetres in some areas, causing flash flooding and saturated ground concerns.
The storms resulted in widespread infrastructure damage, including fallen trees and downed power lines. Approximately 65,000 Toronto Hydro customers lost electricity during the peak of the event. Major transportation routes, including the Don Valley Parkway, Lake Shore Boulevard, and the Gardiner Expressway, experienced closures or restrictions, while subway services and flights at Toronto Pearson were also impacted.
Following these events, weather patterns indicate a continued risk of severe thunderstorms in southern Ontario. High humidity and moisture levels are expected to fuel further thunderstorm potential, with localized flooding remaining a primary hazard as cold fronts move through the region.
