Indian Railways warns of fines and jail for loud mobile use
Indian Railways has issued warnings regarding passengers who cause nuisance by playing loud music, watching videos on mobile speakers, or engaging in loud conversations on trains and at railway stations. Southern Railway has specifically reinforced these guidelines following complaints that such behavior disturbs the comfort of fellow travelers, particularly during rest periods.
Under Section 145 of the Railways Act, 1989, passengers found creating a nuisance may face an immediate fine of up to Rs 1,000 and removal from the railway premises. If the disruptive behavior continues after a warning, the penalties increase significantly; offenders could face up to six months of simple imprisonment and/or a fine of up to Rs 5,000.
Authorities recommend that passengers use earphones for audio content and keep mobile ringtones on vibrate or low volume, especially between 10 PM and 6 AM. Passengers can report disturbances via the Rail Madad portal or by calling the railway helpline at 139.
