Southern Region roads see two deaths and 40 major crashes during long weekend

A four-day police operation across the Southern Region from October 2 to 5 resulted in 40 major crashes and two deaths. The two fatalities occurred at Tura Beach, accounting for half of the state's total deaths over the long weekend.

Drug-impaired driving was identified as a primary issue, with 874 drivers testing positive for illegal drugs. Additionally, police charged 47 drivers with drink-driving offences and 780 with speeding.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley stated that the fatalities were “tragic and, in most cases, totally avoidable,” urging drivers to obey the law and slow down. Assistant Commissioner David Driver added that the incidents serve as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility, noting that dangerous behavior continues despite enforcement and education efforts.
