Patagonia whale calves mortality investigation underway in Argentina

Scientists and authorities in Chubut, Argentina, are investigating an unusually high mortality rate among Southern Right Whale calves. Since June, hundreds of young whales have been found dead along the coasts of Patagonia, including the Península Valdés and Puerto Madryn areas.

Researchers from CONICET, including marine biologist Mariano Coscarella, are analyzing samples to determine the cause. A primary working hypothesis is a bacterial infection known as erysipelas, which can cause systemic illness in cetaceans. While the phenomenon appears to be of natural origin, experts noted that human activities cannot be entirely ruled out until investigations are complete.

The Chubut provincial government is working closely with the scientific community to monitor the situation. Despite the high number of deaths this season, experts suggest the overall population is not at immediate risk of disappearance.
