Southern Spanish Bishops express concern over Ceuta and housing crisis

During the 163rd Ordinary Assembly of the Bishops of Southern Spain held in Córdoba, religious leaders expressed deep concern regarding the current situation in Ceuta. The assembly included representatives from the dioceses of Granada, Sevilla, Almería, Asidonia-Jerez, Cádiz, Ceuta, Córdoba, Guadix, Huelva, Jaén, and Málaga.

Francisco José Sánchez Heras, president of Cáritas Regional de Andalucía, presented a report highlighting that 2025 was defined by a crisis in housing access, which has become a primary driver of family impoverishment. Cáritas reported that its diocesan branches assisted nearly 100,000 people, including approximately 5,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. The organization called on administrations to increase the availability of public housing, residential placements, and mental health services.

Additionally, the assembly discussed the impact of the recent Andalusian Cultural Heritage Law, the importance of contemplative monasteries, and the upcoming Second Pilgrimage and Youth Encounter of Southern Spain, scheduled for November 6–8 in Andújar.
