Taiwan faces severe flooding and missing persons amid extreme rainfall
Heavy rainfall and a stationary low-pressure system have caused severe flooding across southern and eastern Taiwan. Authorities in Kaohsiung and Tainan, along with Pingtung, Chiayi, Taitung, and Hualien, have closed schools and offices due to the extreme weather.
In Kaohsiung, 34 rivers are under red alert for debris flows, and officials expect five-day rainfall to exceed 1.3 meters. More than 2,300 people have been evacuated, and four individuals are reported missing—three in Hualien and one in Tainan. The weather has caused significant infrastructure damage, including a road collapse that swallowed a construction excavator.
Transportation has been heavily impacted, with rail connections on the east coast line interrupted and express trains canceled. While TSMC reported that its semiconductor facilities in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Chiayi are operating normally following weather preparations, the region remains on high alert as tropical depression TD22 intensifies southwest winds and Typhoon Saudel approaches the area.
