Southern University board chairman proposes campus dress code
Tony Clayton, chairman of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors, has proposed the implementation of a formal dress code across the university’s five campuses. Clayton indicated that the idea arose from personal observations during a campus walk and intends to meet with system chancellors to discuss the proposal prior to the next board meeting on Sept. 18.
Clayton cited Tuskegee University as a model for this policy. Tuskegee, a private HBCU in Alabama, recently introduced standards that prohibit revealing clothing, bedroom shoes, bonnets, and do-rags in classrooms and dining areas to promote professional readiness. However, the Tuskegee rollout faced criticism from students who argued the public announcement unfairly characterized the student body.
Unlike Tuskegee, the Southern University System is a public institution governed under the Louisiana Constitution.
