Southwest Airlines announces major Rapid Rewards loyalty program overhaul

Southwest Airlines is set to implement a significant restructuring of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program beginning January 1, 2027. The overhaul aims to address customer behavior where travelers reached top status levels, such as A-List Preferred, and subsequently reduced their spending with the airline.

According to leaked internal briefings, executives including Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson intend to introduce new tiers, such as a Platinum level, to create continuous incentives for high-engagement customers. The strategy involves widening the engagement funnel by providing more incremental rewards and targets to prevent customers from reaching a status ceiling.

While the airline describes the changes as offering more opportunities, critics note that the new structure may be less beneficial for the majority of travelers. Notably, the popular Southwest Companion Pass is expected to become significantly more difficult to earn under the new system.
