Southwest Airlines overhauls Rapid Rewards loyalty program
Southwest Airlines is restructuring its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, transitioning from a two-tier system to a three-tier structure starting January 1, 2027. The existing A-List and A-List Preferred statuses will be replaced by Silver and Gold tiers, respectively, while a new, higher-level Platinum tier will be introduced for the airline’s most frequent travelers.
The overhaul is part of a broader transformation of the airline’s traditional operating model, which has recently included the introduction of assigned seating and plans for airport lounge facilities. Under the new system, Silver status will require 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or 25 qualifying flights, while Gold status will require 65,000 TQPs. Platinum members will receive enhanced benefits, including the ability to travel with a Companion Pass at no cost, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
To facilitate faster status attainment, customers using Southwest co-branded credit cards from Chase can earn 1 TQP per $1 spent. The airline aims to increase revenue and better compete with other major carriers by rewarding high-spending customers and offering more flexible travel experiences.
