Southwest Airlines weighs Boeing 787 for long-haul expansion

Southwest Airlines is evaluating the acquisition of widebody aircraft to launch long-haul international services, potentially within the next three years. According to sources familiar with the matter, the carrier is leaning toward the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as its first widebody jet option.

To mitigate the long wait times associated with new aircraft orders, Southwest is considering obtaining planes through lessors or the secondary market. While the Boeing 787 is a primary candidate, the airline has also examined Airbus models, including the A321neo XLR, A330neo, and A220.

The transition to long-haul service would require significant operational adjustments, including new regulatory certifications, maintenance protocols, pilot training, and labor contract negotiations. This strategic shift follows recent changes at the airline, such as the introduction of assigned seating and plans for airport lounges, as it seeks to attract higher-spending passengers.
