Southwest Finland apple harvest increases bio-waste volumes

An abundant apple harvest in Southwest Finland is leading to an increase in organic waste at sorting stations managed by Lounais-Suomen Jätehuolto (LSJH). Authorities are advising residents to sort unusable or spoiled apples into bio-waste bins rather than mixed waste or yard waste.

According to LSJH, apples are highly nutritious and decompose quickly, making them ideal for bio-waste processing. In a previous record-breaking year, the company received nearly 520 tons of apples as bio-waste. These materials are sent to Uusikaupunki, where Biolinja Oy processes them into biogas and fertilizers. Properly sorting these items ensures more efficient resource utilization compared to treating them as yard waste.
