Four Corners region faces catastrophic flooding and tornado damage

Severe flooding and storms have struck the Four Corners region of the United States, impacting Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Heavy rainfall, fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Trudy, caused several rivers to reach historic levels. The San Juan River at Farmington reached levels not seen since 1927, while the Piedra River near Arboles doubled its previous record.

In New Mexico, a tornado touched down in Santa Fe on a Saturday night, causing property damage. A fatal incident occurred in Santa Fe during a water rescue attempt when a woman was swept away by currents in a flooded arroyo. Emergency responders, including the New Mexico National Guard, conducted numerous hoist operations to rescue residents stranded on rooftops.

Significant infrastructure damage has been reported, including severed highways in Colorado and widespread power outages. Officials have warned of potential health hazards, as floodwaters in some areas have been contaminated with raw sewage due to waste plant failures. New Mexico lawmakers have requested an emergency declaration from the President to assist with recovery efforts, which are estimated to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
