United States heat wave affects over 100 million people
More than 100 million people in the United States are currently under heat advisories, with 46.7 million facing extreme heat warnings. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that the heat wave has reached a critical point, particularly impacting the Midwest in states such as Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Kansas, as well as parts of Texas, Arkansas, and North Carolina.
Heat index values are expected to reach or exceed 40.5 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southern plains and lower Mississippi Valley, with temperatures potentially hitting 43.3 degrees Celsius (110 degrees Fahrenheit) in southern Texas. The NWS advises residents to limit outdoor activities during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and ensure access to air conditioning. The extreme weather follows a particularly warm summer, including a heat wave in early July that resulted in approximately 30 deaths.
