Sovereignty wins Breeders’ Cup Classic before retiring to stud
The four-year-old colt Sovereignty concluded his racing career with a dominant victory in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland. Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty finished 1 ¾ lengths ahead of The Puma, with Knightsbridge taking third place.
The win marks a significant comeback for the 2025 Horse of the Year, who missed last year’s Breeders’ Cup due to a fever. Sovereignty retires with eight wins from 13 starts and over $10.5 million in earnings. Owner-breeder Godolphin announced that the stallion will stand for an advertised stud fee of $150,000 at Darley America.
In other notable results from the championships, Aidan O’Brien set a record for the most wins by a trainer at the event, securing three victories including the Breeders’ Cup Turf with Benvenuto Cellini. The stallion Into Mischief also saw significant success, with his offspring winning both the Classic and the Juvenile races.
