Soviet Engineer Petr Borisov Proposed Bering Strait Dam to Melt the Arctic

In the mid‑1950s Soviet engineer Petr Mikhailovich Borisov drafted a plan to build a massive dam across the Bering Strait, the narrow waterway separating Russia from Alaska. The design called for an enormous barrier and a large‑scale pumping system intended to block the flow of cold Arctic water into the Pacific, redirecting it to warm the northern seas and accelerate Arctic ice melt.

The project never progressed beyond the design stage, but it was published and generated interest both within the Soviet Union and abroad.
