Soybean gene studies pinpoint targets for higher protein and optimized flowering

Researchers using MutMap+ and TILLING‑by‑Sequencing identified a missense mutation in the Gly4 gene and additional glycinin mutants that influence seed protein content, amino‑acid composition, vigor and digestibility. Mutations in the β‑conglycinin genes GmCG‑1, GmCG‑2 and the sucrose‑binding protein GmSBP‑1 were also linked to increased protein levels in soybean seeds.

A separate analysis of soybean orthologs of Arabidopsis flowering genes examined their allele frequency across elite U.S. soybean lines. Several candidate genes showing latitudinal distribution differences were highlighted as likely contributors to the adaptation of soybean maturity groups to varied photoperiods.
